One-year experiment over: One Stop Video shutting down

In March 2009, I started One Stop Video as an experiment in video aggregation.
I wanted to see what a website would look like that curated the best videos from around the World Wide Web. I selected everything from viral videos, television commercials, amateur remixes and mashups, and professional comedy shorts. It was fun, but too much work for me right now.
I still believe there is a great need on the web for a premiere curator of online videos. No one likes to watch a bunch of lame videos to find one good one. That's the value that a curator would provide. Even the best original video websites are hit and miss -- the Onion News Network, CollegeHumor and Funny or Die. And they focus only on their own videos.
For One Stop Video, I tended to curate videos from aggregators such as the Huffington Post, Digg and I Am Bored, as well as those original content creators I previously mentioned.
Here's hoping that some group will step up to be the TV Guide of online short videos.
I expect to continue posting links to funny and interesting videos, just not embedding them, on my original blog Tech-media-tainment. Here's the first batch. I'll tag these lists "One Stop Video" for old time's sake.

I don't have a problem with PR firms in general, just those that blindly pitch stories to writers. The good PR professionals understand a reporter's needs, what they cover and what their publication's focus is. The bad ones don't bother to learn those things. And they'll pester reporters who would never cover what they're pitching.

As a fan of “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Christmas Vacation” (1989), it was nice to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reunited as the Griswolds, even if it was just a 15-minute video promoting HomeAway.
The short movie “Hotel Hell Vacation” has some pretty funny bits. It’s definitely worth viewing for fans of the movie series.

I'm a fan of Australian DJ and remix artist Pogo. I previously featured his techno remix of "Mary Poppins" called "Expialidocious" on One Stop Video.
His latest is a remix of "Terminator 2" called "Skynet Symphonic." It was composed entirely from small sounds in the movie.
"Each section is composed entirely of sounds from a major scene in the film. For example, the Terminator pounding on the fire escape door is used as a kick drum. Bones breaking play the role of a snare. Electrical disturbance acts as a crash cymbal," he writes.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was a good sport recently when he agreed to sign a student's Apple notebook computer at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. Lots of tech websites got a chuckle out of the video. (See TechFlash report.) But the truth is, the relationship between Microsoft and Apple is much more complicated than it was in the early days of the PC. Microsoft does a good business selling Office productivity software for Macs. Microsoft also is reportedly in talks to get its Bing search engine installed as the default on Apple iPhones and Macs.
So while Microsoft and Apple may compete, they also are partners.

One of the most popular subjects for parody in 2009 was the “Twilight” series of emo vampire movies.
The movies – and the books they’re based on – are wildly popular with adolescent girls. Fans are willing to overlook the movies’ shortcomings, but critics and humorists (including Conan O'Brien) have been having a blast mocking the series.

Is Apple’s reality distortion field starting to wear off for the iPhone?
Apple’s popular smart phone has been hammered for its poor 3G wireless coverage in commercials by Verizon attacking AT&T. Those ads certainly have tarnished the iPhone’s image. Here’s a sample ad, where the iPhone is relegated to the Island of Misfit Toys from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
On Dec. 19, “Saturday Night Live” took a swing at the iPhone in its Weekend Update segment. Check it out up top.

Pavement artist Edgar Mueller

I like the work of pavement artist Edgar Mueller. Here he receives a Guiness World Records certificate for anamorphic pavement art. He did the art at the Westfield Shopping Center in West London for the release of Ice Age 3 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.
Anamorphic images use the phenomenon and technique of "perspectival anamorphosis"; this involves creating a distorted image that can only be seen properly from one view point.

After splashing cold water on Twitter with a couple of cartoon satires, Current TV has turned its attention to another Web 2.0 phenomenon - LinkedIn.
LinkedIn, a social networking site for professionals, is a tougher target than microblogging service Twitter.
Like its Twitter satires, Current's LinkedIn satire tries to say "the emperor has no clothes." It challenges the usefulness of the site, including the belief that LinkedIn helps people find jobs.
I'm not sure about that claim either. But personally I use LinkedIn as a digital Rolodex to keep track of sources and their current jobs and titles.

Microsoft Store breaks into song and dance

Microsoft so badly wants to be cool like Apple, but fails miserably.
Here the employees at Microsoft's new retail store in Mission Viejo, Calif., start a line dance to the music of the Black Eyed Peas.
Brad Slavin, who posted the video to YouTube, saw the singing and dancing as a good thing. "This is an amazing store, the employees seem really excited and engaged, almost happy to be at work," he wrote. (See his YouTube post here and his blog post here.)
Engadget saw only downside. "Why is it that whenever Microsoft tries to have a little 'fun' it comes across as creepy or overly controlled?" Thomas Ricker wrote on Engadget.
A poll on the Huffington Post finds that 67% of viewers find the Microsoft Store dance "cringeworthy," followed by 25% "cute" and 8% "crazy."
