'Twilight' parodies

One of the most popular subjects for parody in 2009 was the “Twilight” series of emo vampire movies.
The movies – and the books they’re based on – are wildly popular with adolescent girls. Fans are willing to overlook the movies’ shortcomings, but critics and humorists (including Conan O'Brien) have been having a blast mocking the series.
I’ve already posted parodies from Saturday Night Live, CollegeHumor and G4.

2000s Decade Recap - Business and Technology

SNL slams the iPhone

Is Apple’s reality distortion field starting to wear off for the iPhone?
Apple’s popular smart phone has been hammered for its poor 3G wireless coverage in commercials by Verizon attacking AT&T. Those ads certainly have tarnished the iPhone’s image. Here’s a sample ad, where the iPhone is relegated to the Island of Misfit Toys from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
On Dec. 19, “Saturday Night Live” took a swing at the iPhone in its Weekend Update segment. Check it out up top.

Linked In ... to what?

After splashing cold water on Twitter with a couple of cartoon satires, Current TV has turned its attention to another Web 2.0 phenomenon - LinkedIn.
LinkedIn, a social networking site for professionals, is a tougher target than microblogging service Twitter.
Like its Twitter satires, Current's LinkedIn satire tries to say "the emperor has no clothes." It challenges the usefulness of the site, including the belief that LinkedIn helps people find jobs.
I'm not sure about that claim either. But personally I use LinkedIn as a digital Rolodex to keep track of sources and their current jobs and titles.

Microsoft so badly wants to be cool like Apple, but fails miserably.
Here the employees at Microsoft's new retail store in Mission Viejo, Calif., start a line dance to the music of the Black Eyed Peas.

Engadget saw only downside. "Why is it that whenever Microsoft tries to have a little 'fun' it comes across as creepy or overly controlled?" Thomas Ricker wrote on Engadget.
A poll on the Huffington Post finds that 67% of viewers find the Microsoft Store dance "cringeworthy," followed by 25% "cute" and 8% "crazy."

Kylie, age 4 1/2, uses a Windows PC

Subway has Jared; Microsoft has Kylie.

Now Microsoft is using a precocious 5 1/2-year-old girl named Kylie in its ads to emphasize how simple its Windows 7 operating system is. Even a kid can figure it out. Take that Apple.
Kylie first came to the public's attention last year, when at the age of 4 1/2 she starred in a Microsoft commercial. (See above.) She's starring in a few more commercials timed with the launch of Windows 7, which was released Thursday.

Kylie Minogue: Love At First Sight

I saw Kylie Minogue in concert on Oct. 13, 2009, in New York City. Her big finale was "Love At First Sight" from her 2002 album "Fever." Great song and one that's gotten better over time. The version she does in concert has a stronger bass line and better dance beat than the studio release. It's a terrific number.
Above is the music video for the song.
Below are two performances of the song at stadium concerts in Europe -- Manchester, England (2006) and Poland (2009). Notice how the first performance is highly choreographed with dancers in elaborate costumes like a Las Vegas show. The second doesn't have dancers and focuses on Kylie and her band. It shows her progression as a performer, with Kylie more confident in her star presence.

What follows are some amateur videos of her performance of the song at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom last week. Kylie restaged the song for a club setting. Her joy of performing really comes through. Seeing her perform just puts a smile on my face.
The video and audio quality of these clips are iffy, but they do a good job capturing the feel of being at a live club performance of Kylie Minogue on her first U.S. tour.

Another view of the same opening night NYC performance:

Probably overkill, but here's two clips of the same finale from her Oct. 13, 2009, show in NYC -- the final performance of her first U.S. tour. The first was taken close to the stage.

And finally, video from the balcony of the Hammerstein Ballroom that night.

"2001: A Space Odyssey" opening with music performed by student orchestra

I haven't laughed so hard in ages. Here's the opening of "2001: A Space Odyssey" with music performed by a student orchestra. They're terrible, horribly offkey.
The music is by the Portsmouth Sinfonia. (For more information, check out their Wikipedia page.)

Sesame Street: 'D' Dance

Children's television program "Sesame Street" imitates Apple's iPod commercials to illustrate the letter D as in "dance." Features Big Bird, Elmo and Snuffy. It would have been better if it had Cookie Monster dancing to "I Left My Cookie at the Disco."

Public speaker fail

The only things that stand the test of time on the Internet seem to be embarrassing videos and photos. Once they go viral and get passed around online to the amusement of millions, they never die.
Here's a good example. This woman's rambling, nonsensical speech to the Santa Cruz, Calif., City Council on May 13, 2008, has been copied and reposted across the Web.

365 Days of Exercise

365 Days of Exercise from Adam Conover on Vimeo.

I admire this guy's dedication to exercise and proper diet. I wish I had the same drive. It looks like he gets a little extreme about halfway through this time-lapse video though. Turns out this video is basically an advertisement for a fitness regimen. The subject is John Stone from John Stone Fitness.

Autotune controversy

Not since disco has there been a musical style that has divided music fans as much as autotune. Autotune refers to technology that corrects pitch in vocal and instrument performances.
Many artists have used the technology since the late 1990s to disguise offkey singing and other mistakes in performances. But recently, thanks to R&B singer T-Pain, autotune has been used to distort the human voice and create a distinct sound in popular music. T-Pain's style has been copied by numerous R&B and pop artists. It was even spoofed in a series of online videos called Auto-Tune the News.
The technology was already controversial for helping cover up lousy singing. But now the distorted vocal effect has become one of those musical stylings that's likely to define an era of music. Years from now you'll hear one of these tunes and think about how dated it sounds. (See Wikipedia entry on Auto-Tune for more about the controversy.)
The top video shows T-Pain demonstrating his new iPhone App called I Am T-Pain to other artists.
The next video is a music video from KRS-One and Buckshot mocking autotune in a track called "Robot." Warning: KRS-One and Buckshot video is R-rated for language.
The final video is from the Auto-Tune the News series of mashup and remix videos by the Gregory Brothers. (See Wikipedia entry on the Gregory Brothers.)
